Tarpon Springs, FL

Named after the “tarpon” residents witnessed jumping or “springing”” out of the water, Tarpon Springs was established in 1876 and is home to the world famous sponge docks with a long seafaring history. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s settlers from places such as the Bahamas, Key West and (mostly) Greece migrated here to “dive’ for sponges and then bring them to the docks to clean them. Yes, sponges, the things you use to wash dishes.

Every January 6th the Greek Orthodox Church holds its annual Epiphany celebration. This event consists of a group of 16-18 yr-old-boys diving into the (very cold) water to retrieve a wooden cross tossed in by a priest. Whomever retrieves the cross is said to have great blessings all year long. This event is said to triple the population of the city on this day because people from all over the country make a pilgrimage to attend.
