Is Music That Important

The 226th One 8/21/24

I hope you enjoy these. For anyone who doesn't know, this is a year long project for myself where I write a blog entry a day. The artwork is something I did last year. Before 1/3/23 I had never drawn one thing in my entire life and then one day I decided to teach myself to draw and drew like 350 pictures last year. It's not just for me but also for Swift Moves in hopes of getting our rankings up on search engines. Does it work? Who knows. If anyone enjoys the artwork I post and wants me to send them an original, let me know and I'll send it to you in a frame.

Music has changed the world more than one time. I think there's about five different times in music that not only changed music but changed the world as a whole. The first is Elvis Presley's first hit record “That's All Right” in 1954. This song was what essentially created rock and roll but pretty and much made the teenager a target consumer. So it changed the way advertisers did things and it changed the ways kids acted in general. They no longer blindly followed their parents.

The second in the Beatles Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967. While the Vietnam War was raging this album heralded in the Summer of Love and made people more aware of peace rather than war. Plus a lot more but I'm not writing a book.

The third one would be Run DMC’s “Raisin Hell” released in 1986. To me this might be the most important one. It broke down many racial barriers. In 1986 I lived in a fairly small town in the middle of Texas. The first rap song I ever heard was “U Be Illin” off this album. I remember hearing on the radio and it changed my outlook on a lot of things. And it wasn't just me. We were surrounded by a lot of not so nice views on race but after this came out we (my entire generation) started viewing people different from us in a different light.  This album changed the way people talked, walked, dressed, lived and eventually voted.

Number four would be N.W.A’s “Straight Out of Compton” released in 1988. This took rap from being party music to showing the disadvantages that African Americans faced in their everyday lives. Was it rude, crude, over the top and almost too much? Yes, but that seemed to be what was needed at the time. It made people like me realize the plight and struggles other people were going through.

Number five is Eminem's debut album “The Slim Shady LP”. This album gave whiteboys everywhere hope. By this time rap had definitely taken over the number one spot in sales of all albums but there had only been a few semi-successful white rappers. Eminem changed all that, which in turn changed the world. It wasnt just his race but also what he rapped about. He brought a generation of kids together and let them know it's not just you struggling with everyday life. We all had problems. But if this white guy could be at the top of a genre that had traditionally been dominated by other races then there was hope for all of us. While I might not have worked my butt off to be a rapper I certainly looked at what he accomplished for inspiration in my own life. Not to mention how this album and rapper pushed racial relations to a new level.

For the record I'm not dying on any of these hills. I'm just writing because I made a commitment to write for a year. Even though it might not seem like it to you, this stuff could almost be controversial and that's not what I'm going for. I'm just writing to fill space.

The Artwork-This is definitely one of my favorite pictures that i drew last year. It's a character named Bluey. This one really intrigues me, it's like some MC Escher picture.  The way my drawing appears is exactly how the cartoon is and he’s looking at himself, it's so trippy. The proportions and colors of this one seem perfect. I love how his eyebrows are in his ears. I most certainly enjoyed drawing this one. I hope you enjoy it!

Contest-This is an ongoing contest. It's a weird thing. On 6/27/24 we started with $10 then everyday I'm adding $1. The first person to call in or comment or message gets the money. Here's the kicker. You can either call in right now and get $10 (or whatever it happens to be this day) or wait till the next day when the money goes up. I think I have like 175 days left so the pot can get up to almost $200. It's free money, it's not a scam, it's in the marketing budget. No employees or employee families are eligible. I hope you win!

The total on 8/21/24 is $63.
